A Night Without follows a sleepless father on the brink of losing his sanity as he desperately tries to soothe his crying baby. What begins as an ordinary, intimate moment slowly unravels into a psychological descent. The narrative is inspired by Anton Chekhov’s short story Sleep. The film was conceived as an eerie, psychological animated horror that fuses symbolic and esoteric influences with a universally relatable life experience, exploring the limits of the human psyche under extreme pressure and exhaustion. Musically, the score draws heavily from Rosemary’s Baby, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, and the work of the band Goblin, known for scoring iconic 1970s horror films such as Suspiria. The aim was to create a sonic texture that feels tribal, ancient, existential, and slightly post-apocalyptic, searching for what remains spiritually when humanity is stripped of cultural conditioning and cognitive defenses. Best Animation - Beliff Film Festival Review "A Night Without" is an imaginative take on a very fascinating and deeply challenging subject, the human reaction to intense pressure, sleep deprivation and patience levels. The profound artistic elements borrowed from paintings come to shape a unique style of animation. Whilst there is a high level of tension and sense of danger built thoughout the ending comes to offer sweet relief. Or does it? My recent work includes directing, narrating, and composing music for a preschool series centered on two very different and very funny travelers: the level-headed Perry and the mischievous Harley. With opposite approaches to every challenge, they discover that there is more than one way to solve a problem. The series combines live-action performances with animation. Actresses were videotaped in a green-screen studio, with 2D animation integrated during post-production to create a playful, hybrid visual world. Key inspirations for the development of the show include Jules Verne’s steampunk aesthetics, commedia dell’arte theatre, and classic physical comedy from Charlie Chaplin and slapstick traditions to the absurdity of Monty Python and action comedy. Musically, my goal was to create a distinctive sonic signature that feels surreal, quirky, and otherworldly, while remaining warm and welcoming for young audiences, with a hint of vintage charm. Like classic cartoons, the score is composed in a “Mickey Mousing” style, closely reacting to on-screen action and enhancing the show’s comedic and whimsical tone. Musical inspirations range from Peter and the Wolf to 1970s obscure synth and library music, including the work of Mort Garson and Jean-Jacques Perrey. Inspired by I. L. Peretz’s short story The Whistle, MATAR takes place in a barren land where everything is dying. A tribe gathers under the guidance of a shaman leader to perform a ritual intended to summon rain and save their land. A young boy, eager to take part in the ceremony, is rejected by the tribe, who see him as a distraction. Unbeknownst to them, it is the boy’s innocence that holds the true power to call forth the rain and ensure their survival. The animation is created using an analogue cut-out technique, composed of layered paper arranged on glass and lit from underneath, resulting in a tactile and organic visual language that supports the film’s spiritual themes. The music was composed using an Irish bodhrán and sampled sounds, reinforcing the ritualistic and elemental atmosphere of the film animation by: Ilai Margulis and Itamar Isaak Beliff Film Festival Review “Once again, your animation Matar approaches a deep and profound subject and achieves a strong philosophical meaning. In its seemingly simple story of a tribe praying for water while forgetting—and shunning—the innocence that can actually grant their wish, there is not only insight but irony as well. The animation style fits the narrative beautifully.” Created by Itamar Isaak (Izakman) and Ilai Margulies Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, 2017
An exterminator arrives for a routine workday in an ordinary, nondescript apartment. Gradually, the apartment becomes a meeting point between past and present—and between spirit and matter. “Man In My Living Room” is an intimate Israeli comedy for which I composed the music and operated the sound. Written by Tzipor Eizin Lior, the play premiered at the Simta Theatre in Jaffa, and received positive reviews. It explores relationships and chance encounters within a domestic space, presenting romantic dilemmas and interpersonal dynamics in a light, heartfelt, and relatable way. To set the tone of the play, I composed a main theme that balances subtle suspense and mystery drawing on a film noir detective sensibility while remaining playful and slightly goofy, allowing the naughtiness and comedic elements to come through. Dalia Kedar, a 56-year-old career-driven woman, takes early retirement and suddenly finds herself facing the internet and her own desires and longings, which erupt unexpectedly. While browsing online, she meets a young man who invites her into a wild sexual adventure. Dalia, unfamiliar with the virtual world, believes it to be a romanceand indeed becomes swept up, a little too much, into an unforgettable night that spirals completely out of control. A sharp, bold black comedy.
